스모키 노플하면 보컬리스트로서의 그의 존재감을 먼저 이야기 하지 않을 수 없습니다.

사실 우리나라에선 WOW GOSPEL 시리즈를 통해서만 만나 볼 수 있었기 때문에 자칫 블랙 가스펠 스타일의 보컬이라고만 생각 할 수 있지만 엄밀히 따지면 Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway와 같은 7,80년대 소울과 R&B 보컬들의 영향을 많이 받은 가스펠, 70년대 소울, Contemporary R&B의 퓨전이라고 표현하는게 더 적확할 듯 합니다.

이번 앨범을 들어보면 그런 그의 음악적 특징이 무척 잘 녹아져 있음을 알 수 있습니다.

그래서인지 한국에선 기독교음악씬보다 일반 음악, 특히 음악을 전공하는 실용음악 보컬들 사이에서 더 유명한것 같습니다.

그는 2004년 발매된 앨범 'Nothing Without You'를 통해 2005년 그래미 어워드에서 'Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album'상을 수상하며 일약 세계적인 아티스트로 알려지게 됩니다.

 

두번째는 피아니스트이자 작곡가로서의 노플입니다.

이번 앨범에서는 3번 트랙 'I Need a Word'에서만 피아노 연주를 했는데 실제 라이브에선 그의 놀라운 피아노 실력을 자주 확인 할 수 있습니다. 또한 작곡으로 이스라엘 호튼이 참여한 1번 트랙을 제외하곤 모든 트랙에 작곡자로서의 그의 역량을 볼 수 있습니다. 아래 링크한 영상들을 보시고 꼭 직접 확인해 보세요!

한때 저도 저렇게 피아노 치며 노래하는 제 모습을 상상하곤 했었는데.... 현실의 피아노 실력은 쿵짝쿵짝..... 암튼.... 워너비 아티스트 노플.... 

 

마지막으로 목회자로서의 노플입니다.

노플의 이력 중 특이한 것이 있는데 그는 대학(University of Arkansas)에서 역사를 전공하고 중학교에서 7년동안 역사교사로 일했습니다. 그후 감리교회인 African Methodist Episcopal church에서 처음 목회자로서 활동했고, 2005년에 직접 'Victory Cathedral Worship Center'를 설립하고 지금까지 목회를 계속하고 있습니다.

14년차 사역자 노플은 아내 Carla, 두 아들 Tré와 Ashton, 그리고 딸 Ashley와 함께 미국의 시카고에서 살고 있습니다.

 

최근에 'Monday Morning Manna'라는 라디오 프로그램을 시작한것 같네요.
